When you think of cider’s heritage, your tend to recall rough-and-tumble English ciders produced in the West of the country. However the French have their own, long cider making tradition centred in the northern region of Normandy – there’s mention of the stuff being made there as early as the middle ages.

Like French wine, it developed alongside a rich food culture and its fine acidity can be a great, cleansing companion to rich cheeses, creamy sauces, crêpes or buttery apple desserts. This ‘cidre bouché’ (meaning it’s bottled under cork) has little of the acquired-taste barnyard funk of more traditional farmhouse ciders. Instead, it’s moderately carbonated, full of fresh apple notes, a citrusy acidity and whispers of yeast and oak.
